Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) can be geographic areas, populations, or facilities. These areas have a shortage of primary, dental, or mental health care providers. Scores are on a scale of 0-25/26; a higher score indicates a greater need of providers within that area or population.
To find out how HRSA calculates HPSAs, go to Scoring Shortage Designations on bhw.hrsa.gov
To find HPSA scores, go to Find Shortage Areas on data.hrsa.gov.
You can also use the Health Workforce Connector to find HPSA for health care facilities participating in these programs:
The Bureau of Health Workforce Footprint Map is interactive mapping application that provides a comprehensive view of BHW assets, including BHW program sites, in-service BHW program participants, submitted eligible BHW applications, Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), and other relevant health workforce datasets – all in one place.
And key data sets on participants, sites, and applications are updated daily, so you get the most recent data available.
